Proclamation of Homelessness Awareness Week

PROCLAMATION
Homelessness Awareness Week
Mat 29th – June 4th, 2006

WHEREAS in the City of Thunder Bay there are many people who are homeless through circumstances often beyond their control, including instances such as, loss of jobs caused by economic downturns in our society, a lack of access to medical and mental health services, abusive situations at home forcing them to leave, and the lack of affordable or social housing.

WHEREAS in Thunder Bay there are many dedicated groups, organizations and individuals providing shelter and support services to countless numbers of individuals annually. These professional staff, volunteers, and community stakeholders all play a specific role in assisting homeless people, from infants to seniors, through the creation of a system that provides a broad range of life services, as well as education and career counseling, mental health, addiction, detoxification and harm reduction services in a caring, responsible, supportive environment.

WHEREAS the causes and incidences of homelessness are unacceptable in our community and the existence of housing insecurity causing homelessness will only be challenged, in a significant manner, with the acknowledgement and support of the broader community,

NOW THEREFORE I, Lynn Peterson, Mayor of the City of Thunder Bay, do hereby proclaim May 29th – June 4th, 2006, as “Homelessness Awareness Week”, in the District of Thunder Bay.

Lynn Peterson,
Mayor
