Poverty Free Thunder Bay Activity to Sept. 2012

Made poverty elimination a municipal election issue by providing all candidates with an information package with a Thunder Bay focus on structural poverty, what city does and can do. Followed up by raising questions at all candidates’ forums.

Assisted Lakehead Social Planning Council in preparing applications to fund development of a poverty elimination strategy

Obtained strong support from Mayor and a number of councillors for funding strategy development

Made deputation at City Council budget hearings, and to Ontario All-party Finance Committee Pre-budget Hearing

Influenced City Strategic Plan 2011-2014 Goals and Strategic Direction (5.2) to set for first time ever anti-poverty statements.

Providing input to all stages of the development of the city poverty elimination strategy

Co-sponsored with Thunder Bay District Health Unit launch of Cost of Living Well report with a media event of Muppets at Quality Market

Partnered with Lakehead Social Planning Council, Evergreen, Kinna-aweya Legal Clinic, Northwestern Ontario Women’s Centre to organize the Social Assistance Review consultations in Thunder Bay

Co-sponsored with Lakehead Social Planning Council breakfast event with Mark Chamberlain business leader and past Chair of the Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction

Partnered with Lakehead Social Planning Council, Thunder Bay Housing and Homelessness Coalition, Kinna-aweya Legal Clinic, Northwestern Ontario Women’s Centre to organize consultation on Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing LONG Term affordable Housing Strategy.

Held Poor No More film showings and discussion on north and south sides of town

Presented discussion on systemic causes of poverty to high schools, women’s institutes and church groups

Circulated alert to organizations with vulnerable constituents about change in income tax returns

Issued media release and spoke on CBQ with Kinna-aweya about loss of OW and ODSP Start Up and Home Repair funds.
